On Tuesday, October 15, the first informative meetings for new applicants seeking a mason’s license took place. These meetings, which were well attended, marked the initial phase of a four-stage process. The next stages will include mandatory training sessions and exams. The Chairperson of the Building Licensing Committee, Perit Godwin Agius, addressed both meetings, outlining the steps applicants must follow to obtain their license.
The two meetings, one held in Maltese and the other in English, provided detailed explanations of the four compulsory training sessions. All applicants must attend these sessions, which are designed to help them prepare for both the theoretical and practical examinations. Perit Agius explained that these sessions are part of a new process introduced as a result of legal reforms, updating a law on mason licensing that had been in effect for over 100 years.
“With the introduction of the new legal notice, there are major changes to how the license is obtained,” said Agius. “Now, applicants are evaluated based on a formal syllabus, which did not exist before. The committee will assess their capabilities according to this syllabus.”
Minister for Justice and Construction Reform, Jonathan Attard, also addressed the meeting, praising the rigorous process led by the Masons Licensing Committee and the Building and Construction Authority. He noted that this new licensing system aims to enhance the value of craftsmanship in the construction industry and improve overall quality. Minister Attard added that the licensing reform aligns with ongoing changes in the regulation of contractors involved in demolition, excavation, and building.
The meeting was attended by the Acting Chief Executive of the Building and Construction Authority, Perit Roderick Bonnici, along with other representatives from the Authority.
This process, for applicants who applied for a mason’s license by October 11, 2024, is expected to continue until November 21, 2024. After this period, the Masons Licensing Committee and the Building and Construction Authority will open a new application window for those interested in obtaining a mason’s license.
